..........
imagine you're at the local corner-store and you get the sudden urge to steal a chocolate bar. you walk around the store for a bit, even go to the washroom in the middle of your visit so as to draw attention away from yourself. you walk up to the chocolate bar section and grab the chocolate bar that you've craved for the last five hours and start to sneak it into your inside jacket pocket... but something stops you... a voice perhaps? no. its your conscience. its telling you what is right and what is wrong. at the moment, stealing that chocolate bar is the wrong thing to do... otherwise your conscience wouldn't be bothering you.
why would your conscience only bother you if your doing something wrong though? romans 2:15 says "which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another" - our conscience bears witness of the holy spirit. God works with our consciences. His holy law is written on our hearts. we know God's holy moral law. "We do?" you ask. yes. the term "conscience" means 'with knowledge' - con = with - science = knowledge. our conscience knows what's right and what's wrong according to God himself because of God's moral law.
what moral law is that? the ten commandments.
Exodus 20:so how do you line up against the ten cannons of God's law? picture yourself against a wall - and ten cannons pointed straight at you. what will happen if you die and face God on judgement day? will you be innocent or guilty according to God's law? do you think a good judge will let a criminal go free just because you say "i'm sorry"? God is a good judge. He must punish those who sin. "for the wages of sin is death..."
3Thou shalt have no other gods before me.4Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
6And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
7Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
8Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
12Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
13Thou shalt not kill.
14Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15Thou shalt not steal.
16Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
17Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
now picture yourself being sentenced as guilty - and now being led off to jail... then suddenly a man you don't even know - goes to the judge and pays the $500,000 fine to get you out of jail.
that is what Jesus Christ did for us. we broke God's law - and we're headed for hell. but Jesus came and died for us. He payed our fine. if we believe and repent (turn away from sin and run in the opposite direction) we will be saved. We broke the law and Jesus paid our fine.
..........
i pray that this has made you think. it's made me think. scripture says to examine ourselves to see if we are in the Faith. i will be praying for those of you who read this blog - and those who don't. it breaks my heart to see people who have not been warned of the wrath to come.
until next time - go serve your King.
